About TickerNotch
TickerNotch is a macOS app that turns the notch on a MacBook into a live information strip. Instead of dead space at the top of the screen, you get scrolling tickers for markets, weather, follower counts, system stats, and news, always visible without stealing a pixel of usable display. It's built by BitVibe Labs, the one-person studio of independent developer John Farmakis, and it runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later. If your Mac has no hardware notch, a simulated notch mode draws one so external displays and older machines get the same strip.
The market data is the headline act. You can track crypto like BTC and ETH, indices like the SPX and NDX, commodities like oil and gold, the VIX, and individual stocks, all updating live. Tapping into a watchlist item opens candlestick charts with 1 minute, 5 minute, 15 minute, and 1 hour timeframes, which is enough to sanity-check a move without opening a brokerage app. The Pro tier goes further and tracks actual holdings, so the strip shows profit and loss on your positions rather than just raw prices, and price alerts fire notifications when something you watch moves past a threshold.
The rest of the slots cover everything else you'd glance at during a day. Weather shows temperature, highs and lows, wind, UV index, and rain for multiple cities. Social counters pull live subscriber and follower numbers from YouTube, GitHub, Twitch, Bluesky, and Mastodon, which makes it a quiet dashboard for anyone who ships things in public. System metrics cover CPU load, memory usage, and live network upload and download speeds. A news marquee scrolls headlines from RSS feeds you choose and flags breaking items. For a creator, the follower counters quietly replace the ritual of refreshing five different analytics pages. Any individual slot can also be pinned as its own separate menu bar item if you want it outside the notch.
The natural audience is people who already keep half an eye on something all day. Traders and crypto holders watching positions, creators watching a subscriber count tick up, developers watching GitHub stars, and anyone who likes their machine's vitals in view. It replaces the pattern of alt-tabbing to a browser tab every few minutes with information that's simply present. It also earns its keep where a second monitor full of dashboards would be overkill or impossible, on a laptop in a cafe, in an office where a trading tab on the big screen sends the wrong message, or simply on a 14 inch display where every pixel of workspace counts.
Menu bar ticker apps exist, but the notch placement is a genuinely different idea, since the strip lives in space that macOS wasn't using anyway. The breadth is also unusual for the category. Most competitors do stocks or system stats or weather, while TickerNotch does all of them plus social counts and news in one app with one price.
The design details suggest someone who actually lives with this all day. Slots are configured individually rather than as an all-or-nothing strip, so a minimal setup with one stock and the weather is as legitimate as a wall of tickers. The menu bar pinning matters for the same reason, since the one number you care most about can sit permanently visible while everything else rotates through the notch. And because the simulated notch works on any display, docking the MacBook to an external monitor doesn't mean losing the strip.
Behind it is a single independent developer, John Farmakis of BitVibe Labs, which cuts both ways in the usual indie fashion. You won't get an enterprise support contract, but the app has a full user guide on the site, a published support email, and even a small bug bounty, report a significant bug and you get at least a month of Pro free. The current release is version 1.8.3, so this is an actively shipped app rather than an abandoned side project.
Distribution is unusually generous for an indie Mac app. It's on the Mac App Store, on Setapp, available as a direct DMG download from the site, and installable through a Homebrew cask. One caveat, it isn't available in the EU App Store, so European users need the direct download instead. The free version never expires and includes one slot of each type, one ticker, one weather city, one social counter, one news channel, one alert, and one menu bar pin. Pro unlocks unlimited everything for 5 dollars a month or a 40 dollar lifetime purchase, and a 7 day full trial requires no credit card. A lifetime price under the cost of a year of most subscriptions is the kind of deal that makes trying the free version an easy call.
