DigitalShelf is a web app for building a visual collection of the books you've read and films you've watched, then sharing that collection with anyone through a simple link. It pulls cover art and metadata automatically when you add titles, so you end up with a clean, browsable shelf rather than a plain text list. The idea is part personal archive, part recommendation engine for friends who want to know what you've been into lately.

The core mechanic is straightforward. You paste in a few titles, the app fetches the covers and metadata from Google Books and film databases, and your shelf assembles itself. You can mark items as currently reading, finished, or on a to-read list. Favorites get a star, which helps visitors zero in on your strongest recommendations without scrolling through everything you've ever consumed. Books and films live in separate tabs, so the two collections don't blend into a confusing pile.

Signing up is optional for a preview. You can enter up to five titles without an account and see what your shelf would look like. Creating a permanent shelf requires registration, at which point you get a unique URL you can drop into a bio, email signature, or group chat. Because the shelf is public by default, it works as a lightweight social profile for readers and film buffs who want to signal taste without maintaining a full blog.

The product sits somewhere between a simple list app and a heavyweight cataloging tool like Goodreads or Letterboxd. It doesn't have community features like reviews, activity feeds, or friend requests. That keeps it lean but also means there's no built-in discovery of new titles beyond what your own contacts share. If you want social features, this isn't the place. If you want a fast, pretty shelf you can link people to, it does the job.

DigitalShelf runs as a personal project rather than a venture-backed startup. Data is stored on Supabase with hosting on Vercel, and the developer accepts deletion requests through GitHub. The free tier covers everything visible on the site today, and there's no mention of paid plans. For casual readers who want a shareable visual library without the weight of a full social network, it fills a narrow but real gap.
