ZenMode OS is an open-source Android launcher designed to make deliberate phone use easier without turning every minute of screen time into a failure. It replaces the usual icon grid, badges, and attention seeking widgets with a quiet home screen built around a small set of chosen apps and a central search bar. That search reaches apps, files, settings, and the web, so people can go directly to what they need instead of browsing until something distracting catches their eye. The app is Android only, and its stated goal is a healthier relationship with a phone rather than a total detox or a blunt lockout. The home screen can use a light or dark appearance, and only the apps a person chooses need to stay visible. Search ranks the obvious app first and can show the time remaining for it before the user commits to opening it. Those choices make the launcher useful even before the scoring and social features enter the picture.

The core habit starts with a daily screen time promise. Before opening an app, a user can declare why they are starting the session and how long it should last. This adds a brief moment of friction at the point where an automatic tap would usually happen. ZenMode then combines screen time against the user's own promise with the quality of individual sessions to calculate a Zen Score out of ten. Staying within the promise and using sessions intentionally support the score, while drifting into feeds or running well past the promise lowers it. A score of seven or higher counts as a mindful day.

The launcher does more than report a single number. A daily Zen Report itemizes gains and deductions with the minutes attached, while a weekly recap summarizes what pulled at the user's attention, what went well, and one possible change for the next week. The home screen can show the Zen Score with a swipe, and the central search displays time remaining before a limited app is opened. ZenMode can also quiet Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts while leaving useful parts such as messages and search available. A delayed unlock feature is listed as coming soon, so it shouldn't be treated as part of the current product.

Accountability is built around small, restrained connections instead of another social feed. Zen Circle lets a group of friends compare calm use, while Random Connect can pair a user with one other person who wants the same kind of accountability. That partner sees the score and its direction, not a detailed activity log. The free plan limits random connections to five per week, and Pro raises that limit to fifty with first priority. This approach can fit people who respond better to a visible commitment and a little social pressure than to strict app blocking or guilt heavy reminders.

Zen Gold adds an unusual reward for keeping the daily promise on five days out of seven. When the condition is met, the app opens a route to buy units of Gold BeES, an exchange traded fund on India's NSE, through Zerodha Kite. The user chooses the quantity, and Kite handles identity checks, payment, execution, settlement, and custody. ZenMode says it never holds the money or the units, and it doesn't provide an investment recommendation. The reward is therefore a handoff to a broker, not cash or an in-app token, and the investment can lose value with the market.

Privacy and transparency are meaningful parts of the design. Usage statistics, scores, sessions, and screen time calculations are handled on the phone. Pairing and other account features use ZenMode's servers, and the app sends basic usage analytics, but an accountability partner receives a score rather than a private log. The project is published under GPLv3, with its source available for inspection and contribution. There are no ads, which matters for a product whose purpose would conflict with earning more when a user stays engaged. The narrow platform choice is the main practical limitation since there is no iPhone version and one account covers one device.

ZenMode has a permanent free plan with the launcher, daily Zen Score, Zen Circle beta access, central search, seven days of history, and no ads. Pro extends history to all time, adds downloadable data, a longer report view, more random connections, and a thirty minute pause for the distraction blocker. The site lists an introductory annual price of ₹699 for new subscribers, billed through Google Play, as well as a ₹208 monthly option. Since those offers can change, Google Play is the final source for the current charge. The free plan is substantial enough to test the complete daily habit before paying for the longer view and extra controls. If a subscriber stops paying, the launcher and free features continue working while the Pro history, export, and pause controls switch off.
